Amazing Grace

grace coddington

She’s unique.

She’s my muse, my role model, one of the biggest inspirations.
Because she’s a strong woman, she has character, she is fierce and she is an unbelievable artist. She is a visionaire. She is bold but delicate. She is poetry.

A couple of famous editorials of Grace Coddington

When I see her in videos or pictures and when I admire her editorials I turn into a child again and think “Oh, I want to be her…”.

And she is my favorite Red Dot.

Sorry Grace, I know that my drawing is not beautiful neither flattering but I’ve been wanting to illustrate you since ages… Tonight I found the inspiration, I took watercolors and inks and I couldn.t stop! (but I will do another attempt one day and see if it comes out better…)

Finding somebody that does what you really want to do is a really strong way to keep yourself inspired. Her work is amazing and if her works sparks a passion in you to do something along the same lines try and use that inspiration and influence in your work and make a start, you might amaze yourself one day at how much this inspiration can push you in the direction you wish to go yourself :)

Actually the job that Grace does is one of my dream jobs, you know the ones that you dream of when you’re a teen? :D. One was to be a fashion designer, and the other one to be a journalist/stylist for a fashion magazine. She embodies my idea of art into fashion perfectly and she’s exactly the kind of stylist that I wanted to be in my dreams: not only able to mix clothes but also incredibly good to create a story, a visual concept… Her pictures sometimes look like paintings, they’re so complete… That’s why she inspires me so much and she will be one of my role models forever :-)

Invece il disegno è bellissimo! Complimenti, sei davvero brava (ho sbirciato i tuoi lavori). Anche a me la Coddington piace molto, nel film The September Issue era troppo simpatica e teneva testa alla Wintour con garbo e fermezza :)

    • Al says:

      Grazie mille!!

I have admired Grace since I saw the September Issue Film. Her editorials are lovely. Although I admit I am more of an Anna Wintour in terms of personality. Amazing grace is a fitting title indeed.

I see you have a thing for red heads: Grace, Taylor… :P
The drawing is nice! I think it’s representative of her…but I think with a lighter background it would have more light and more focus on her hair, which is her trademark after all!

    • Al says:

      Yes I have! :D
It’s another of my red dot fixations… I also had red hair for years but it’s very tiring to keep them (and now I prefer my original color anyway)
I do agree with you on the light thing: she looks like a witch while I would have liked to show her more ethereal. The problem when I paint with watercolors is that sometimes I start in a direction but then the drawing becomes totally different than I thought it should be XD Sometimes is good, sometimes is bad…
But I’ll surely try to paint her again one day ;-)

you’re wrong, your illustration of grace is fierce as is she and I can feel the inspiration behind your work.
    I just love her.
